Agricultural Warehouse Racking Project – Vinatech Australia
Problem
Agricultural supply chains are highly sensitive to seasonal fluctuations. During peak harvesting, processing or procurement periods, large quantities of similar products can arrive at the warehouse within a relatively short time, creating temporary but significant pressure on storage capacity.
For this project, the customer needed a warehouse capable of absorbing these seasonal inventory peaks without continuously expanding the storage footprint.
Unlike distribution centres handling thousands of individual SKUs, agricultural warehouses often hold larger quantities of the same or similar products. This creates an opportunity to organise inventory by product type, batch, harvest period or dispatch cycle rather than maintaining direct aisle access to every individual pallet.
The warehouse therefore needed to:
- Absorb substantial inventory increases during peak seasons
- Store larger quantities of similar products in concentrated blocks
- Separate different batches and product groups
- Utilise the considerable warehouse height available
- Reduce dependence on temporary floor stacking during seasonal peaks
- Maintain sufficient reserve capacity for fluctuations in inbound volume
- Support structured stock rotation between storage and distribution
The objective was to create a warehouse with enough capacity headroom to respond to agricultural seasonality, rather than designing only around average inventory levels.
Solution
Vinatech developed a high-density deep-lane racking configuration that concentrates pallets into large storage blocks extending both vertically and into the depth of the warehouse.
The completed structure reaches approximately 11 metres in height and provides 5 pallet storage levels, taking advantage of the substantial clear height visible within the facility.
Instead of dedicating multiple access aisles to individual rack rows, each storage block contains multiple deep lanes. These lanes can be assigned according to product type, production batch, harvest period or outbound schedule.
This creates a practical zoning model for agricultural inventory: one product group or batch can occupy a defined lane or group of lanes, making it easier to accommodate large incoming volumes without dispersing identical stock throughout the warehouse.
The proposed project specifications are:
- Approx. 6,500 m² warehouse area
- Approx. 9,000 pallet positions
- Approx. 11 m racking height
- 5 storage levels
- Approx. 1,385 pallet positions per 1,000 m²
- Multi-deep pallet storage lanes
- Dedicated lanes for individual product groups or batches
- High vertical utilisation for seasonal inventory
- Concentrated storage blocks for large-volume goods
With approximately 9,000 pallet positions, the warehouse gains significantly more flexibility to absorb fluctuations between normal and peak inventory periods.
Outcome
The completed system transforms warehouse capacity into a seasonal buffer for the agricultural supply chain.
Across the 6,500 m² facility, approximately 9,000 pallet positions can be accommodated, representing an average of around 1,385 pallet positions per 1,000 m² of total warehouse floor area.
More importantly, the five-level deep-lane configuration allows incoming agricultural products to be allocated by batch rather than relying heavily on temporary floor storage when volumes rise.
The project provides:
- Approx. 9,000 pallet positions within the warehouse
- 5 vertical storage levels across an approx. 11 m structure
- Approx. 1,385 pallet positions per 1,000 m²
- Greater reserve capacity for seasonal inventory peaks
- Concentrated storage of high-volume product groups
- Clearer batch and product zoning
- Reduced reliance on temporary floor stacking
- Better use of available warehouse cubic volume
- Greater flexibility to allocate additional lanes when individual products experience temporary volume increases
For agricultural operations, this reserve capacity is particularly valuable. A warehouse does not necessarily operate at maximum occupancy throughout the year, but it must be capable of handling periods when inbound volume rises much faster than outbound demand.
The completed high-density system therefore gives the customer room to respond to those peaks while keeping inventory organised within the existing facility.
Testimonial
“Our storage requirements can change significantly during peak periods, so having sufficient reserve capacity is critical. The new racking system allows us to consolidate larger product batches into dedicated storage areas and manage seasonal inventory increases without relying heavily on temporary floor storage.”
