Retail 4-Way Shuttle Racking Project – Vinatech Australia
Problem
Large-scale retail distribution requires high storage capacity while maintaining efficient inventory movement, particularly during seasonal and promotional peaks.
With a warehouse measuring 155m × 90m, equivalent to approximately 13,950 m², the customer needed to accommodate 46,500 pallets within the existing footprint. Conventional pallet racking would require extensive forklift aisles, limiting storage density and increasing travel distances for pallet handling.
The key requirements were to:
- Accommodate 46,500 pallet positions within 13,950 m²
- Maximise the available 22 m vertical space
- Reduce the floor area required for forklift aisles
- Support high-volume pallet storage and retrieval
- Reduce forklift travel within the storage area
- Handle seasonal peaks and changing retail inventory volumes
The challenge was to achieve very high storage density without compromising the efficiency of pallet movement.
Solution
Vinatech implemented a 4-Way Shuttle Racking System designed specifically for high-density pallet storage and automated pallet movement.
Instead of requiring forklifts to travel through multiple aisles to access individual storage positions, the 4-Way Shuttle System uses automated shuttles capable of travelling in both longitudinal and transverse directions within the racking structure.
This allows pallets to be transported between storage lanes with significantly less dependence on forklift movement inside the storage area. Forklifts can focus primarily on pallet transfer at designated loading and unloading points, while the shuttle system manages internal pallet movements.
By combining high-density racking with automated pallet movement, the system converts both the warehouse footprint and vertical volume into highly productive storage space.
Outcome
The completed 4-Way Shuttle System enables the customer to store approximately 46,500 pallets within 13,950 m², achieving a high overall storage density while making effective use of the facility’s 22 m height.
By distributing inventory across 8 vertical storage levels and reducing the number of conventional forklift aisles, more of the warehouse volume can be dedicated to pallet storage.
Automated shuttle movement also reduces the need for forklifts to travel deep into the storage area, supporting faster and more consistent pallet handling during high-volume retail operations.
The project delivered:
- 46,500 pallet positions within 13,950 m²
- Approx. 3,333 pallet positions per 1,000 m²
- Full utilisation of 22 m racking height across 8 levels
- Higher storage density through reduced aisle requirements
- Reduced forklift travel within the storage area
- Automated internal pallet movement
- Greater capacity to manage seasonal and promotional inventory peaks
- Improved scalability for future storage demand
For the customer, the system provides a high-density and scalable storage platform capable of supporting the volume and operational demands of large-scale retail distribution.
Testimonial
“The 4-Way Shuttle System has allowed us to achieve the storage capacity required within a limited warehouse footprint. With more than 46,000 pallet positions across eight storage levels, we can make much better use of the available space while reducing forklift movement inside the storage area. The system also gives us greater flexibility to manage higher inventory volumes during peak retail periods.”
